Which Amazon Store Category?

What Amazon store category should you choose to beat the competition?

Amazon is the largest online marketplace used by millions of buyers and sellers from all over the world. Thanks to its unique selling policy, many sellers decide to offer their product via Amazon. However, in the last few years, the competition has become fierce and, as an Amazon seller, you are constantly looking for ways to beat the competition. One way to do this is to focus on the store category in which your products are listed. For most sellers, this is not important and they finish this selection instantaneously without thinking. However, every Amazon seller should know that there is a better way to select a category, and the category you select can affect your ranking and sales.

Most products can be placed in a few different categories. For example, if your product is a hand cream, you can put it in beauty, healthcare, sports and fitness and travel accessories.

But, which category is the best and how can you use this opportunity to increase your sales and stay ahead of the competition?

Before I answer that, I’ll caveat that this scenario only works for private labeled products.

Most Amazon sellers are quite excited when they get a chance to offer their product on Amazon. As we all know, before this happens, they must learn more about the rules and regulations, create an effective product offering and read all the Amazon guidelines. Once they are done, they usually make the same mistake and don’t think about the category where they place their products.

Amazon sellers can choose one of more than twenty categories which are completely open without restrictions. On the other hand, there are categories which require approval before the product is listed. Amazon sellers with a professional selling plan are the only ones that can ask for approval.

The process of getting approval is very simple – you just need to use the contact us link, complete the form and submit the request. It takes less than three days for Amazon to approve or deny your product. Once you get approval, you might have to get in touch with Seller Support to switch products in the different category.

One of the simplest methods to select the best category is to check similar products offered by your competitors. If you search a generic term like ‘hand cream’, the results will show you what category these products are listed in. Make a list of the best-selling products in each category and note the number of reviews in order to decide which is the strongest performing.

Bear in mind that some categories can be super competitive (4-5 products with 1000+ reviews), and so you might choose a different sub category to differentiate your listing. However, if you go too obscure, you will reduce the chances of a customer finding you by browsing the category menu.

Of course, choosing the right category is not the only thing that you need to do to have success on Amazon. You will also need a high-quality product, great images, competitive pricing, great customer service and rich, persuasive listing copy with strategically placed SEO.
