Internet marketing strategies and tips for businesses

If you’re a new ecommerce website, startup or small business owner, you probably don’t have a massive marketing and advertising budget to get your brand in front of a big audience. But don’t worry, there are still some powerful online tricks you can use to promote your website or business.

In this post, I will let you in on my top online marketing strategies and tips that are effective in extending your reach and will help grow your customers, without costing an arm and a leg.

My top internet marketing strategies and tips:

1. Create a company blog

This is one of the best ways to market your business and, done right, can bring plenty of organic traffic to your website without needing to advertise. It’s called ‘inbound marketing’. Meaning the leads come to you because they are searching for information covered in your blogs.

You can either hire an expert to plan and write your content, or if you’re good at writing and can talk authoritatively and passionately about your business niche, you could do it yourself.

Use Google Keyword Planner to find keywords that relate to your product or service and use these keywords naturally in your blog title and posts.

EXPERT TIP: You need a powerful CTA to make the most of this organic traffic and get the customer to take the action you want them to.

2. Utilize email marketing

Once you get traffic to your site you can encourage users to sign up with their email in exchange for a newsletter, discount or a download of something free. For this you need an email sign up form or pop-up to be part of your website design.

Connecting with your email list is an extremely effective way of marketing your business and, in conjunction with a blog and social media, is in the top 3 online marketing tips I always recommend to my clients.

Create quality, engaging content in a nice template, think about a relevant call to action or offer, and you can’t really go wrong! Mailchimp’s free account service for up to 2000 subscribers will get you started.

EXPERT TIP: You can get a simple and attractive email template designed for next to nothing on Fiverr. The visual aspect of your online communication counts if you want to build trust!

3. Get on social media

This is an online marketing strategy that you just can’t ignore (it’s in my top 3 tips for a reason). Social media is THE best way to grow your brand’s reach exponentially and it’s all about the shares.

If you can create one post that promotes your website or business in some way, and just one user shares it, you will get your brand in front of potentially hundreds of people that may never have otherwise known your company existed. Now imagine if 100 people shared the same post?

That’s the power of social media and why it’s so important to distribute quality content like your blogs, newsworthy company info, offers and competitions via all the major social media platforms. Be creative with your content and your online presence could blow up!

EXPERT TIP: Don’t ignore Google Plus because the giant search engine (that is so key to small businesses and startups) looks favorably on websites that use their own social media platform.

4. Create local business listings

Listing your business on the three best local listing services will help to bring you up in search results and allow local customers to find you more easily.

Google My Business
Bing
Yahoo! Local

EXPERT TIP: If you are going for a local customer base, put as much information as possible on your listings, like opening and closing times, full contact info and any photos.

5. Connect with the press

Nowadays, distributing a press release is an internet marketing strategy because it’s all done digitally and you never know who on the internet might pick up a story to give your small business, startup or website valuable exposure. It’s not just the major news outlets anymore. There are millions of bloggers and online media sites that could potentially pick up your story.

EXPERT TIP: The website PR log is a free press release distribution service, so all you have to do is create something newsworthy (and on brand) and get it out there!

6. Understand SEO

The way search engines and internet users understand what your business or website is about (and decide if it’s useful to them), is by reading the words you use. Search engines analyze your site and decide if you would be a useful search result for the user. But they need help. This is why keywords are so important.

By learning about SEO you will be speaking the internet’s language. You’ll also be making sure you’re attracting targeted traffic and making the most of all the opportunities the internet has to offer your business. Get started with Google’s Keyword Planner.

EXPERT TIP: For an effective online marketing strategy, target relevant longtail keywords and phrases that are low competition. Use them in your blogs as well as your web copy.

So, now you understand how to promote your website, startup or small business online without a mega advertising budget, you can go forth and use the internet to your competitive advantage!

If you need some expert help with any of the above, let’s talk.

How to Sell Stuff on Amazon for Beginners: 8 Easy Steps

A beginners guide for how to sell stuff on Amazon - beach and laptop

Run your Amazon store from anywhere in the world – even the beach!

Are you wondering how to take advantage of a multi-billion dollar marketplace and sell stuff on Amazon? In this post I’ve put together a step-by-step guide for beginners that will give you an overview of the process and help you decide if this whole deal is for you.

Firstly though, if you are thinking of selling through Amazon, I would seriously recommend that after reading this post, you immediately go and read this book.

So here are my 8 easy steps for how to sell stuff on Amazon:

1) Find a hot product

The first thing you need to do is find something to sell on Amazon. It is important that you find a product you’re at least mildly interested in so that you:

a) get more out of your new business venture and
b) can inject some passion that your customers might pick up on.

Check out the current bestselling products on Amazon in a category you are interested in. The rule of thumb is, if it has less than 1000 reviews, there’s still an opportunity to be had and the competition won’t be too much. The product doesn’t have to be in the top bestseller spots either. As long as it’s in the top 5000 products of the top level categories, you’re good.

You can also find hot products before they blow up on Trendosaur.

2) Find and connect with suppliers

Once you know what you want to sell, go to Google and type in the product name, then add the term ‘suppliers’ or ‘manufacturers’. You’ll probably see the website Alibaba in the top search results. Many Amazon sellers import from China and Eastern Europe from this site.

Just make sure to check all of the quality assured boxes when you’re searching so it only shows trusted and accredited suppliers.

3) Receive product samples

Choose at least 3 suppliers to receive samples from and be willing to pay around $30 each for them. You can’t cut any corners here, because you need to assess what your customer will be receiving and pick the best product.
Simply send a message to the supplier, say you are going to be selling on Amazon and you’d like to receive a paid sample. If you can demonstrate you are serious, in some cases, the supplier might send you the sample for free.

PRO TIPS:

  1. Choose a product that will sell for between $7 – $60 and, ideally, weighs less than 1 pound so it will be easy to ship.
  2. For any product that goes on the body (face cream, hair gel) or is taken orally (supplements, food products), use a supplier in the US so it’s FDA approved, or Western Europe so it’s FSA approved.
  3. Check that the supplier can repackage the product with your own branding before paying for a sample.
  4. Choose based on which product is the best quality, not which unit is cheapest!

4) Design your own brand/logo

Now you have to name your brand. Brainstorm a list of words that mean something to you and a list of words related to your category or product.

For example, if you live in California and you’re going to be selling kitchen gadgets, you might name your brand ‘The Cali Kitchen Company’. Or if your daughter’s name is Emily, you could name your brand something like ‘Emily’s Kitchen’. By making it personal to you, your beliefs, your surroundings or your life, it will be easier to create a brand name and it will mean so much more to you.

After you’ve created a brand name, go to Fiverr and get a logo designed. Check that the designer has created branding for a similar business and get them to supply a full set of files (including AI, jpeg, png and print ready pdf) that you will then be able to send to your supplier to incorporate into the packaging.

It’s not essential, but it can also build trust in your brand if you secure your domain name and build a simple website.

5) Sign up to Amazon FBA

By signing up to Amazon FBA you can automate selling through Amazon and manage everything from your laptop. Amazon will store your inventory and when someone buys your product, they will ship it for you. It does eat up extra margin, but it makes your life easier, provides a better service to your customers and will build the trust often required for someone to make the purchasing decision.

6) Get your supplier to send inventory to an Amazon warehouse

Once you’ve signed up to Amazon FBA, all you need to do is get your supplier to send your first batch of personally branded product to the Amazon warehouse address and reference provided. Simple!

7) Create an outstanding Amazon listing

Listing products on Amazon is very competitive, so if you want to sell stuff, your page needs persuasive marketing copy that is benefit lead and SEO optimized.

That’s where an expert Amazon copywriter like me comes in! I see so many listings suffering from ‘the curse of knowledge’ where the seller only lists the features of a product instead of the benefits.

Feature = this amazing face serum includes 100% pure aloe vera, organic witch hazel, green tea extract and vitamins E, D & C.

Feature + Benefit = this powerful anti-ageing formula of clinically tested ingredients contains 100% pure aloe vera and organic witch hazel to restore your skin’s youthful glow and give you back your confidence.

Your sales copy needs to answer the consumer’s number one question:

“What’s in it for me?”

You also need excellent product shots and lifestyle imagery of your target audience. Your supplier should provide products shots that you can then get a designer to cut out so it’s on a white background (you can get this done on Fiverr too). You can source superior lifestyle imagery from libraries like Fotolia and Dreamstime.

If you decide to go for it, my Amazon Listing Service can help you out with an outstanding listing that will kick your competition’s ass.

8) Manage your stock levels and monitor your account online

From your Amazon Seller Central dashboard, you’ll be able to monitor everything from how many page views your listing is getting to where your product ranks in your category. Most important of all, you’ll be able to monitor your sales.

You’ll also be able to see when your stock is running low. When this happens just get your supplier to send more stock directly to Amazon. Just remember to leave enough time so you don’t run out of stock and give your competitor the edge.

If you’re at this stage you’re doing well, because low stock means you’ve made good sales. Perhaps you’ll grow your brand and stock a range of products off the back of your success…

And the best thing is? All of this can be done from the beach with a laptop, making you a true digital nomad.

Now you’re no longer a beginner. Good luck!

Customer service tactics for better Amazon reviews

June 29, 2016

I often provide consultation to sellers regarding customer service tactics as part of my Amazon Listing Service. I’m going to share a bit of that insight with you here.

Amazon is a global online marketplace with millions of buyers and a huge number of sellers. In order to kill it on Amazon, sellers need to include some of the essential elements that make every business successful, like having good customer service. This is especially true for those who are selling technical products, which need technical support.

Obviously, we can’t say that every customer service has the same quality. Sellers who have business experience are well aware that one of the most important things related to customer services is to create and maintain a good relationship with EVERY SINGLE BUYER you have. By thanking each buyer and creating a helpful and customer-oriented environment, you can be sure that you will leave a positive lasting impression. The fact is, that a satisfied buyer will come back more often and will probably spend more money when they do. In addition, it is a well known fact that good customer service makes buyers leave positive reviews, and as we all know, customer reviews can be crucial for your product’s success on Amazon!

So, what are the best customer service tactics for better reviews?

To start with, you must be super responsive. So, whenever you receive an inquiry from a potential or existing customer, you should respond as soon as possible. Of course, the information you provide must be accurate, helpful and well written. Don’t forget that if it takes too much time for you to respond, the customers will probably find another seller. Plus, it’s an excellent opportunity to learn more about your potential and existing customers. The basic goal is to anticipate their requirements and desires. With the help of email messages, social media networks and phone calls, you can find out what they do and don’t like about the products you have on offer.

In other words, you need to create a meaningful interaction that will benefit both sides. You must encourage them to provide feedback and reviews. Even if you receive a negative review, it is important to analyze the review and provide a suitable answer. Especially if the review looks well thought out.

Successful Amazon sellers use customer service tactics that help to show that they are not some faceless corporation. Customers need to talk to a compassionate and friendly individual that can help them get an answer to their questions, and quick! It is interesting how sometimes a representative doesn’t solve a problem, but people are satisfied anyway because the customer service rep was ‘nice’.

In the end, don’t forget that there is no universal solution for customer services. The way in which these services are provided depends on the products you are offering. So, it is a good idea to analyze the customer services style and activity of your competitors.

Spending some time doing research related to customer services is a savvy move that can result in many positive reviews. Since time is crucial in this business, it is also helpful to hire a professional who can help you with writing engaging customer emails and responses. I can help with this crucial stage. Which Amazon Store Category?

June 23, 2016

What Amazon store category should you choose to beat the competition?

Amazon is the largest online marketplace used by millions of buyers and sellers from all over the world. Thanks to its unique selling policy, many sellers decide to offer their product via Amazon. However, in the last few years, the competition has become fierce and, as an Amazon seller, you are constantly looking for ways to beat the competition. One way to do this is to focus on the store category in which your products are listed. For most sellers, this is not important and they finish this selection instantaneously without thinking. However, every Amazon seller should know that there is a better way to select a category, and the category you select can affect your ranking and sales.

Most products can be placed in a few different categories. For example, if your product is a hand cream, you can put it in beauty, healthcare, sports and fitness and travel accessories.

But, which category is the best and how can you use this opportunity to increase your sales and stay ahead of the competition?

Before I answer that, I’ll caveat that this scenario only works for private labeled products.

Most Amazon sellers are quite excited when they get a chance to offer their product on Amazon. As we all know, before this happens, they must learn more about the rules and regulations, create an effective product offering and read all the Amazon guidelines. Once they are done, they usually make the same mistake and don’t think about the category where they place their products.

Amazon sellers can choose one of more than twenty categories which are completely open without restrictions. On the other hand, there are categories which require approval before the product is listed. Amazon sellers with a professional selling plan are the only ones that can ask for approval.

The process of getting approval is very simple – you just need to use the contact us link, complete the form and submit the request. It takes less than three days for Amazon to approve or deny your product. Once you get approval, you might have to get in touch with Seller Support to switch products in the different category.

One of the simplest methods to select the best category is to check similar products offered by your competitors. If you search a generic term like ‘hand cream’, the results will show you what category these products are listed in. Make a list of the best-selling products in each category and note the number of reviews in order to decide which is the strongest performing.

Bear in mind that some categories can be super competitive (4-5 products with 1000+ reviews), and so you might choose a different sub category to differentiate your listing. However, if you go too obscure, you will reduce the chances of a customer finding you by browsing the category menu.

Of course, choosing the right category is not the only thing that you need to do to have success on Amazon. You will also need a high-quality product, great images, competitive pricing, great customer service and rich, persuasive listing copy with strategically placed SEO.

An experienced Amazon copywriter can do wonders when it comes to conversion rates!

3 top tips to optimize and differentiate your Amazon listing

Amazon listing service - top 3 tips

Copy is the most important factor when optimizing your Amazon listing. There are however some other things you can do as a seller in addition to hiring an expert Amazon copywriter.

I’ve listed my top 3 tips below which will help you build trust and differentiate your listing from your competitors.

1. Use high quality images

The images of your product are one of the first things your potential customer on Amazon experiences, so they have to be of a high quality if you want to convert sales, or even get the user to click on your listing in the first place.

That first image that is displayed is so important because that is what appears on your thumbnail and as the main image of your product listing. Once you have the user on your listing, a high proportion of them won’t look at the other images you have on there, so they will be making a judgement based on your first one.

There are two types of images you should have: lifestyle and product shots. The lifestyle shots should be high quality stock photography that shows a model in the same demographic as your target audience, enjoying your product. The product shot should be a close up of your product from different angles and on a white background.

There’s no point investing in an expert Amazon listing service then cutting corners with your images.

2. Shoot an advertorial or how-to video

This is favourable for both Amazon and your potential customer. You don’t need a huge budget to create something with a decent production value and you don’t have to be in the shot. In can be as simple as a close up of your hands or someone else’s hands using your product. You could also hire someone quite cheaply to do it for you on sites like Fiverr.com. You could also get your Amazon copywriter to help you out.

Video reviews are also attractive to Amazon and potential customers.

3. Answer questions professionally and politely

When people ask questions about your product, if they see you can give great customer service by giving a professional and informative answer, you will gain trust. Remember that the majority of visitors to your Amazon product listing will be browsing these questions and answers. Show them you’re a pro and that they can trust your customer service.

If you take care of the three areas above (in addition to hiring an Amazon copywriter) to create powerful SEO optimized sales copy for your page, you’ll be well ahead of most other sellers.
