Amazon Seo: How to Rank Your Product Listing Higher

Whether your a beginner seller or an Amazon Pro whose sales have plummeted, you’ll be tearing your hair out wondering how to rank your product listing higher and get more sales. It’s not only SEO that you need to get right, there are some other key areas you can optimize to improve your ranking and boost conversions.

 

Do comprehensive keyword research

Your keyword strategy should involve finding high volume, low competition keywords that are relevant to your product. This is especially important if your product has tons of competition on Amazon. Find the sweet spot and you’ll not only sell WAY more, but you’ll also improve your sales ranking as a result.

I highly recommend using Helium 10 for both keyword research and reverse ASIN searches. In the Cerebro app of that software you are given a score based on a number of factors including which are the best high volume, low competition keywords. A high Cerebro IQ score means there’s an opportunity staring back at you. Make sure you include the ones with the highest score in your title, and the rest in your bullets

 

Include your main benefit in the title

Titles stuffed only with keywords that don’t make any sense are very off putting for a customer. You need to strike the balance between persuasive benefits and keywords so that people feel compelled to click on your listing after liking what they see in the search snippets.

Remember – a benefit tells the customer how your product is going to improve their life.

So for example, if you are selling a sleeping mat for camping, this is the difference:

FEATURE: Thick 2 inch foam
BENEFIT: Sleep comfortably anywhere

 

Included ALL your keywords in the bullets

 You can’t fit all of your keywords in the title, so the next best place is in your bullets. Use the single keyword approach so you don’t have awkward long tail phrases interfering with your rich marketing copy.

 

Have rich marketing copy that converts

I see so many Amazon sellers prioritize features over benefits, mainly because of a misunderstanding on how the two differ. This results in a labor-intensive reading experience for the customer and misses an opportunity to help them imagine their life with your product in it.

Now you understand from my example above, look at your listing and see if it’s feature heavy, instead of benefit heavy. You need to change that pronto if you want to optimize for conversions. Hiring an Amazon copywriter is an investment that will pay for itself many times over!

A bad review can negatively affect your listing for a significant period of time so do everything you can to avoid one.

Use automated emails to get more positive feedback

Creating a series of automated emails in your brand tone of voice that asks in a fun and friendly way for feedback is an easy way to improve your ranking and persuade other customers to buy your product. It continues to build trust in your brand and starts to turn your customers into brand ambassadors.

It’s also a great way to capture any negative feedback privately before it is posted on your listing. It does require a Pro account or third party feedback tool, but is totally worth it.

 

Consider an A+ or EBC listing

More and more sellers are creating Enhanced Brand Content and A+ listings for their products, so the bad news is, you’re going to need to create one of those in order to keep up with your competition!

The good news, is that these rich product detail pages seriously elevate your brand’s credibility in the eyes of your customer.

Warning: your content needs to be outstanding! You need elegant copy and beautiful images. Don’t cut corners here or it will do the opposite of what it’s meant to do and diminish your brand.

Test, test, test

This year, one of my clients changed the title of an established listing that had started to drop off. It paid off! He jumped onto the first page within 10 minutes of changing it!

Test what works and be methodical about it. It requires patience, time and analytics, but is well worth it.

If you have an existing product listing on Amazon that you want to optimize, or if you’re just starting out and want to know how to get off on the best foot, the Amazon selling techniques I’m going to share with you in this post will show you how to improve your sales.

 

1. Make sure your listing has rich, benefit-lead marketing copy

Besides having a good product, this is the #1 factor in getting your customer to ADD TO CART. Not only does quality sales copy build trust in you as a seller and credibility for your brand, it also tells the customer how your product is going to improve their life. That’s the difference between benefits and features.

I see so many listings that are feature heavy, and unfortunately, these listings are missing out on a foundational principal of sales – getting the customer to imagine their life using your product.

2. Make sure your product listing is SEO optimized

The next important thing to ensure is that you have a competitive keyword strategy. My top selling clients have found great success with the single keyword strategy (as opposed to repeating the same words in phrases over and over again). Knowing the prime real estate for SEO is key.

When I work on a listing for my clients, I conduct competitor analysis and comprehensive keyword research to create a targeted frontend and backend list. This makes sure their product comes up in many more searches than before, which significantly boosts traffic and sales (because they have great copy to convert that traffic).

 

3. Use classic sales techniques

Google ‘classic sales techniques’ and you’ll find a lot of advice about proven sales strategies that work time and time again because they are based on human psychology.

For example, you probably know about ‘urgency’ and ‘scarcity’. These techniques work brilliantly if you apply them in the right way without being too spammy in style. The classic example being a limited time offer.

 

4. Provide outstanding customer service

This is a slow burner, but definitely pays back and is something you should be really focusing on. Positive feedback is essential to the ongoing success of an Amazon product listing and great customer service can compel customers to leave a rave review, sometimes being even more effective than your awesome product.

Be responsive. Rectify any problems immediately and without question. Provide real value in what you’re offering. Be friendly and professional in tone. And ask yourself – how can I go the extra mile?

 

5. Use a positive feedback tool

There are several tools out there that let you manage your customer feedback and automated email series. One of the best that I recommend to my clients is AMZMailer. It’s really ease to use, offers guaranteed ROI and has great customer service to boot. Check it out!

 

6. Consider sponsored advertising

If your listing has slipped in rankings or you’re trying to launch with a bang, you should consider Amazon PPC advertising. It is one way to come up at the top of the search results above your competitors, unless they are doing it too, in which case you’ll need to outbid them for your chosen keywords.

But it’s definitely worth a trial, especially if you’re starting out or looking for new ways to improve your Amazon sales.

 

7. Create a website to drive traffic

Driving external traffic to your Amazon listing is one great way to improve your rankings and sales. It doesn’t need to be an all-singing, all-dancing website. Just a few nicely branded pages (Homepage with product info, About Us, Contact and Blog page).

Next, you need blog articles or social media posts (or both!) that will drive your potential customers to the website, and then on to your Amazon listing. These are the most important elements.

Conduct keyword research to find out what questions your customers are asking and what their problems are. Create articles that answer those questions and make sure they are SEO optimized. Post them on your website and include a BUY ON AMAZON call to action that links to your listing.

For social media, create engaging content that will delight your audience and keep linking to your website, which ultimately drives them to your Amazon listing. Google loves social engagement and shares, so this is a great way for your own website to get organic sales.

In this quick, but super handy blog post I’m going to give you a free and effective email template for if you’re wondering how to ask a customer to remove negative feedback on Amazon.

So let’s get into it…

Someone has left you a negative customer review on your listing and it’s affecting sales. This could be due to a problem with your product, your listing communication, or you’ve just been unlucky enough to have sold to an unreasonable or cranky customer (unfortunately, this always happens at some point).

What should you do?

I’ll assume you are going to do the usual due diligence by quickly identifying and rectifying any issues with your product with the help of your supplier, and pre-empting any issues in your listing copy (without affecting your rich marketing language and scaring off your customers).

But first you need to urgently stop the leak!

Asking a customer to remove their negative feedback can be an effective way to solve the problem, if only while you fix any bigger issues.

Here’s a template for the email and how you could potentially turn the problem around to your advantage…

Dear (First name)

I am very sorry that you were unhappy with your (insert product name) and that it didn’t meet your satisfaction.

Here at (insert your company name), we pride ourselves on exceptional quality standards and customer service, and I would like to take the opportunity to rectify the situation for you by offering a full refund or replacement.

I want you to be happy with your (insert company name) experience, and will stop at nothing to make sure you are happy. So please let me know how I can achieve that by replying to this email.

Customer feedback has a direct effect on how our business grows and improves, and I would therefore like to ask if you wouldn’t mind removing your feedback, just until I have the chance to rectify the problem for you. I’d really appreciate it.

I hope to hear back from you soon. Like I said, just hit reply to this email 🙂

This type of email melts away most people’s disgruntled demeanor and actually impresses them with your personal touch.

By going out of your way to make your customers happy, you can turn issues around and actually turn them into ambassadors for your business. This should be a rule of thumb.

Here are some other ideas for language that you could add to this email, depending on how far you want to go…

If you have an Amazon Vendor Central account, great news! You can now create an Amazon A+ Content listing for free! By creating the perfect balance between images and rich marketing copy you can build trust, elevate your brand, and convert more sales.

From a basic sales point of view, A+ Content Pages (and Enhanced Brand Content listings) make your brand appear larger and more professional than when you have just a normal text listing with HTML formatting.

Basically, it looks sexier.

But you have to get it right or it could be detrimental to your sales. Here are some things you will want to check off:


What are your competitors doing?

It’s always a good idea to monitor what your competitors are doing in case they have the edge on a new sales strategy or product innovation. Don’t steal their content, but be inspired by their strategies and get innovative.


Hire an Amazon Consultant and Copywriter

A professional Amazon consultant will help you plan out your A+ listing, so that you have the right balance of copy and images, plus the right focus on the benefits and features that make your products stand out.


Create high-quality images

There is no point having an A+ Content listing if you don’t have impactful, high resolution imagery that sells in the quality of your product and the lifestyle your customers can achieve.

You need to show and tell your customers how your product is going to improve their life, because that’s all they care about.

Hire a high-quality designer, or hire someone like me who can manage both images and copy for you.

 

At the moment A+ Content Pages are a free feature only available to sellers with a Vendor Central account (or you can pay to have one). However, my bet is that Amazon will eventually move all sellers over to A+ Content in the not so distant future.

PRO TIP: There is another way to have a rich content listing. If you have a trademark for your product or brand, you can apply to be a ‘registered brand’ and create an EBC (Enhanced Brand Content) listing. This is similar in look to the A+ Content Pages, but the templates/modules are slightly different.
